Ellie’s the WeWorkHard receptionist. She’s a fab worker and is always happy and smiling with the people who visit and all the staff. She has always been very reliable but just recently she’s been taking a lot of time off for hospital appointments and everyone is quite worried about her. Cancer has been mentioned and you can tell she’s not her normal self.
She’s obviously very worried, and it doesn’t help that she works on her own a lot at the front desk. Every opportunity she gets when a staff member comes into reception she’s telling them about what’s going on. And your visitors are often left standing while she gives her friends all the details.
You’ve even caught her on the telephone a few times to her mum. And as much as you sympathise with her situation, you really need her to be doing her work.
How can you help Ellie?
Coping with the unknown can be difficult for anyone, especially with something as life-changing as cancer.
It is normal for Ellie to want to talk about it but what she doesn’t realise is this could be making things bigger than what they really are, causing more worry.
Take time out with Ellie and provide some time to her to share her concerns, provide the best support you can, however, you may need further support to manage the situation.
